John McLoughlin, 1784-1857, was chief factor and supervisor of the Columbia district for the Hudson 's Bay Company from 1824 to 1846, serving first at Fort George (Astoria) and later at Fort Vancouver. These letters cover the period 1825-1846, and include his involvement with the growth of the American (i.e. U.S.) fur trade, the settlement of Oregon, confrontation between the U.S. &; Britain over the extent and ownership of Oregon, etc.
