Alfred Sutro 's copy with his bookplate on front pastedown. Schaeffer left New York in March, 1849, and sailed around the Horn to San Francisco. Kurutz notes that Schaeffer originally contributed these sketches to a religious newspaper under the pen name of "Quartz," and says that "Schaeffer 's book has received the praise of many for providing a congenial, yet uninflated account of his three years in California." Cowan remarks that "nearly the entire work is devoted to California. His narrations are exceedingly interesting." The book includes an account of the "Gold Lake" expedition and diggings.
