Four lithographed illustrations on 1st page of a double sheet: two miners in store, standing, while seated man, right, looks on, signs show high prices; two miners trudging through heavy snow toward a cabin; town scene (apparently Sacramento). horses and wagons mired, pedestrians at right with raised umbrellas; a country scene mule-train knee-deep in mud and slush, a miner lashing at them with whip. 21.4x27 cm. (8½ x10¾"), gray wove paper.
With one-page letter on the conjugate leaf, from J.A. Shumway, dated Georgetown, Nov. 8th, 1853: "Dear Sister, I havent writen you a letter for some little time now and as it came into my mind that you might be expecting one I though I would send you this the cuts where the snow is so deep &; provisions so dear is how it as up north a good way from here, the other one represents Sacramento as it was about the time I came through there where the mud was so deep that I had to take hold of my boot straps to pull my boot out when I stept... "
