Signed Carte de Visite of Admiral David Farragut, Best Known for... “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!”
David Glasgow Farragut (July 5, 1801 – August 14, 1870) was a flag officer of the United States Navy during the American Civil War. He was the first rear admiral, vice admiral, and full admiral of the Navy. He is remembered in popular culture for his order at the Battle of Mobile Bay, usually paraphrased: "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!".
c. 1867 Twice Signed Carte de Visite Photograph of Admiral David Farragut, by Benque-Sebastianutti in Trieste, Italy, Signed “D G Farragut” but virtually 100% faded at the bottom on its image side, and again “D. G. Farragut - Admiral” on the reverse, Very Fine. This 2.375” x 3.875” Carte de Visite features the Commander of the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. Signed Twice, upon both front and back. Farragut is responsible for one of the most famous quotations in U.S. military history, reputedly shouting “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” while ordering his fleet into the heavily mined Mobile Bay in 1864. Farragut was the first man in U.S. history to hold the rank of Admiral. The corners of the CDV have been cut in order to fit into a prior frame for display; and there are old mount traces on the upper reverse. If interested in this lot we suggest... "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"
