Seneca Chief Young King Receipt Signed as His “X” Mark
YOUNG KING (1760–1835) or Koyengquahtah was a "Hoyaneh" or revered traditional Chief of the Seneca Nation.
June 11, 1827-Dated, Manuscript Document Signed by Young King with his “X” mark, witness by Chas. F. Coit, Jellis Clute and Horatio Youas, 1 page, measuring 8” x 6.5”, being a Receipt for “Dollars 100”, Choice Very Fine. This is a rare document, actually Signed by Seneca Chief Young King, great Indian leader, who led the Indians in the famous Wyoming Massacre. This Document has an accompanying letter of authenticity from the renowned collector/dealer Charles Hamilton, in which he described it as extremely rare. The document is for a payment by the US to his tribe in the amount of 100 Dollars. The top right corner is torn and some slight splitting at centerfold, otherwise excellent, easily readable, clean condition. This official United States Document reads, in full:

“Received of the United States by the hands of Jasper Parrish Sub Agent to the Six Nations of Indians, One Hundred Dollars, in full for my individual annuity for the first and second quarters of 1827, per Act of Contress of 16th April 1827. Dated at Buffalo, June 11th, 1827. Young ‘X’ his Mark King. Signed duplicates witnessed in presence of - Chas. F. Coit, Jellis Clute, Horatio Youas.”

Young King (1760–1835) or Koyengquahtah was a "Hoyaneh" or revered traditional chief of the Seneca nation. He was born in the village of Canandaigua, Seneca nation in 1760. He was a descendent of Old Smoke or Old King who was the a leader of the retaliatory war party of the Wyoming Massacre. Young King grew to adulthood during the tumultuous time of the American War of Independence. Fleeing to Fort Niagara with his mother during Sullivan's Campaign. He was elected war chief and was a renowned warrior, a wise counselor and was possessed of high social qualities among his own people and the Americans.

He was a delegate to and a reluctant signatory of the “Treaty of Big Tree” on September 15, 1797. The treaty was delayed, as his people would not commit to the treaty until Young King arrived. He apparently was at the funerals of his friend and cousin and had been delayed. He originally refused the terms of the treaty but was convinced by the Clan mothers and counsel to accept the treaty. He then moved to the reservation at Buffalo Creek.
