Agreement Between “Babe” Ruth & First National Pictures
GEORGE HERMAN “BABE” RUTH (1895-1948). Legendary American Baseball Star and Hall of Famer.
January 21, 1927-Dated, Document Signed, “George Herman Ruth,” 1 page, measuring 8.5” x 11”, being an agreement between Ruth and First National Pictures, Choice Very Fine. Slight even toning, staple removal and slight handling at the upper left. Accompanied by a January 20, 1927-Dated Document Signed by “Christy Walsh” (Manager for Ruth), One page, Quarto, Los Angeles, on Pantages Circuit of Vaudeville Theatres letterhead, releasing him from his contract so he can make the picture with First National. This Document reads, in full:

“Dear Sir:

This confirms our verbal understanding that you are to play the part of ‘Dusty Dugan’ in our forthcoming picture entitled ‘Lily of the Laundry’ and that you are to report for work in said picture February 3, 1927, at nine o'clock A.M., or sooner if possible.

We agree that your part in the picture is to be completed not later than February 24 [1927] and if for any reason beyond our control it is impossible to complete your part in the picture by February 24 then you agree to perform whatever services are necessary to complete said picture in the City of New York or in Florida at your training quarters and to allow us a period of time necessary to complete your part in the picture.

As compensation we agree to pay you the sum of Twenty Five Thousand Dollars ($25,000.00) payable at the rate of Seventy Five Hundred Dollars ($7500.00), per week beginning February 3, 1927. We attach hereto our check for Twenty Five Hundred Dollars ($2500.00), as initial payment on the contract. --- Your signature on the line indicated below will signify your acceptance of the above. --- Very Truly yours, --- ACCEPTED -- (Signed) George Herman Ruth”.

Signed in vivid rich blue ink, “George Herman Ruth,” and witnessed by Ruth's manager, Christy Walsh. The film, starring Anna Q. Nilsson as Ruth's love interest, was released as “Babe Comes Home” in 1927.
