Ten Cents “Joseph L. Bates” Boston “FANCYGOODS” as One Word 2-3 Known
EP-102a, HB-56, Scott-29, Reed-BA10FG. Ten Cents. JOSEPH L. BATES. “FANCYGOODS” as One Word. Light Silvering. Choice About New.
Rated as Rarity-9 (2 to 4 known) according to Fred Reed, with his added comment “2-3 Known.” This example may very well rate as the Finest Known, as the Benjamin Franklin stamp is near perfectly centered, remains deep vivid bold green and is seen under mica that is crystal clear save for a trivial lamination layer crack at the bottom center rim edge. It is far superior to the Stack’s Auction of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection example. The case itself grades About New as it has a fair amount of original Silvering remaining on about 50% of the lovely chestnut back, highlighting the central and outer legends. An important “Key” Encased Postage Stamp rarity, missing in virtually every collection.
