Rated as Rarity-4 (31 to 40 known) according to Fred Reed. A very pleasing example with nice eye appeal. The 5 Thomas Jefferson 1861 issue U.S. Postage bright looking stamp is bold rich deep brown and very well centered. The mica is has light circulation, appears very clear and unbroken with just one craze spot below the left obverse moon. The case is naturally toned to a nice medium chestnut color with excellent definition to the bold reverse legends. This example appears to be a bit finer in overall eye appeal than the Hodder-Bowers plate example illustrated on page 68. A very elusive denomination to locate finer. Provenance: Ex: EAHA Auction December 12, 1998 Lot 396 where it sold for $833.75 over 22 years ago.
