Description
Korea, 19th century
21 ¾ x 20 ¾ x 12 ¾ in. (height x width x depth)
Each of these cabinets depicts a pair of opposed, four-claw dragons in profile. Their heads and fiery manes decorate the facades, while their bodies continue snaking along the sides and finally terminate on the cabinet tops. The manes, tails and claws are highlighted in red lacquer, while the mottled scales of the creatures are depicted with tortoise shell inlay. The dragons writhe amongst swirling clouds picked out in silvered copper wire inlay and designs of mother of pearl. The mounts are traditional butterfly shaped metal mounts and the double doors are secured with a fish form lock. The interiors are lined with patterned green silk and a modern glass top has been fitted to each top, between the upright flanges.
Each in overall good, stable condition. Doors open easily and the mounts and locks are present and functioning. Scattered small losses to the inlay decoration. Wear to the lacquer. The interiors in very good condition, relined with patterned silk. The cabinets measure 21 ¾ x 20 ¾ x 12 ¾ in. (height x width x depth).
