Impressive and very decorative pair of vases with painted Views of the Babelsberg Castle, a special Potsdam collectible
This pair of large 19th century pomp amphora vases refers to the Sèvres-style and was probably made in Thuringia. The valuable vases are glazed in white and delight with their sumptuous gold decoration which is partly painted and partly etched, presenting palmette leaves within heart-shaped scrolls, tendrils and foliage, ornaments and stylized egg and dart borders. The gilt sculpted handles in the shape of griffin heads, as well as the painted Babelsberg Castle landscapes on the front and the reverse of the vases are of particular note.
The vases are each marked with an imitated on-glaze Sèvres mark to the underside. They are in very good condition, showing only a few minor losses of the gilding to the handles. One plinth has a small manufactory flaw. The height of each vase is 55 cm.
