Very decorative allegorical pendulum clock representing Sciences
This gilt pendulum clock represents an allegory of the sciences. It has a movement made about 1860 by the French factury Japy Frères and a casing that has been partly modified and supplemented in the 20th century. The brass movement with eight days duration has a lever escapement and a half-hour count wheel striking mechanism. The guilloche dial with blued steel hands and Roman hours is surrounded by a flowerd bezel. The gilt Louis Philippe casing with a rectangular base that features an allegorical relief with a depiction of the sciences is particularly striking. Above the movement, there is a library shelf with a bust of Homer; beneath a laurel wreath, rulers, books and a pine cone. To the right of the casing stands a goddess, reading a book, and to the left a finely engraved pillar with a globe that are characterized by a very fine and detailed elaboration.
The clock is in good condition, showing light wear. The functionality has not been verified and is not guaranteed. The pendulum, the bell and the cover of the movement are missing. The base shows a small loss to the back. The overall dimensions of the clock are 45 x 31 x 11 cm.
