Lifelike bronze of the 19th century master of animal depictions, Antoine-Louis Barye; the current highest auction record for a standing Basset by Barye is €22,000

This naturalistic bronze sculpture of a standing Basset by the French sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875) boasts a wonderful dark brown patina with a reddish shimmer. The fur of the dog, which stands his tail raised on a rectangle and naturalistic plinth, is depicted accurate in every detail. Barye is considered the master animalier of the 19th century, whose lifelike bronzes achieve record prices at international auctions.

The back side of the plinth shows the artist's signature ‘BARYE’. The bronze is in very good condition, showing minor wear. The underside was painted with golden color and fitted with new screws. The overall dimensions, including the plinth, are 16 x 25 x 10 cm.

Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875)

Antoine-Louis Barye already learned the craft of metal engraving at the age of 14 and he was able to deepen his skills as an engineer in the French army during the Russian Campaign. After his return to civilian life, Barye learned the art of chiseling, and in 1816 he became a student of the sculptor François Joseph Bosio (1769-1845) who recommended him to the painter Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835). Only a year later, Barye was able to achieve a prize at the exhibition of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris with his relief ‘Milo of Croton in battle with a lion’. In 1831, Barye introduced his work ‘A tiger mauling a crocodile’ and established his reputation as an animalier. He received orders from the Duke of Orléans and was knighted as Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Today the Musée de Luxembourg holds some of his models and smaller bronzes.
