GLADSTONE WILLIAM: (1809-1898) British Prime Minister 1868-74, 1880-85, 1886, 1892-94. A.L.S., W E Gladstone, two pages, 8vo, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 30th November 1870, to Mr. Ball. Gladstone states that it has given him pleasure to meet his correspondent's wishes on behalf of Mr. Wilkinson 'by recommending him to the Queen for the Parish of Lutterworth' and concludes by remarking 'Please do consider this as confidential for a few days'. Slightly irregularly trimmed to the left edge. Together with Philip Stanhope (1694-1773) 4th Earl of Chesterfield. British Statesman and Man of Letters. Ink signature ('Chesterfield') and several additional lines of holograph text on a piece removed from the conclusion of a letter. Neatly mounted at one edge and with some light staining and foxing and a small area of paper loss, not affecting the signature. Also including Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) Swiss Painter. Ink signature ('H. Fuseli') and a few additional words in his hand on a small piece clipped from the conclusion of a letter. G to VG, 3
