Description
THE ORIGINAL PRINTED DOCUMENT CONTAINING THE PAPAL BULLS ON THE SUPPRESSION OF THE COMPANY OF JESUS

[Jesuits, Papal bulls] Clement XIV. - Negroni, Card. Andrea. Clemens PP. XIV. Ad perpetuam rei memoriam. Clemente PP. XIV. Per memoria perpetua del fatto. Romae (Rome): ex Typographia Rev. Cam. Apostolicae 1773.

Two works bound together in a plaquette without cover, cm 25 x 19,5; pp. XXVII, (1, blank); IV. Text in two columns and two languages: on the left side in Latin and on the right one in Italian.
No title-pages; nice engraved initials at both works, representing the Papal coat of arms between St. Peter on the left and St. Paul on the right.

The scarce papal Bulls on the suppression of the Company of Jesus.

The first bull is a short decree, very well known with the title Dominus ac Redemptor (from the incipit of the latin text), in which Pope Clemens XIV stated the suppression of the Company of Jesus.
The date of issuing of this bull and its signer are reported at the end of p. XXVII (Dato in Roma appresso S. Maria Maggiore sotto l'Anello del Pescatore il dì 21 di luglio del 1773, nell'anno quinto del nostro pontificato. A. Card. Negroni.).
The second work, another bull by Pope Clemens XIV, reports the reasons which brought to the suppression of Jesuits.
The date of issuing of this bull and its signer are reported at the end of p. IV (Dato in Roma appresso S. Maria Maggiore sotto l'Anello del Pescatore il dì 13 di agosto del 1773, nell'anno quinto del nostro pontificato. A. Card. Negroni.).

Pope Clement XIV (1705–1774), born Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Ganganelli, was Pope from 19 May 1769 to his death in 1774. A good teacher of theology and philosophy, at the time of his election, he was the only Franciscan friar in the College of Cardinals. Pushed by many Catholic sovereigns, who were opposed to the Jesuits, he decided to suppress the Company of Jesus.
Andrea Negroni (1710–1789) was an Italian cardinal, Secretary of State under Pope Pius VII and then under Pope Clement XIV.
