DESCRIPTION: Archive of ephemera from the missionary Reverend H.C.G. Hallock circa late 19th to early 20th century. Includes: 1) 1927 issue of Hallock's Chinese Almanac (started in 1903) 2) Small booklet with note "Peking Gazzette China" 3) Partial mailing wrap from an issue of the Almanac 4) Large fold-out color poster featuring scenes of Chinese life 5) Copy of a typed letter from Hallock dated June 22, 1927 describing the background of the god "Lei-Tsu" and the current troubles in China 5) Small Egyptian booklet 6) A Cairo daily newspaper with notation published by a Roman Catholic 7) Copy of The "Watan" (Nativity) tri-weely newspaper Presbyterian newspaper 8) Three other Cairo newspapers 9) Bulgaria newspaper dated 1883. Henry Galloway Comingo Hallock was born on 31 March 1870 and prepared for ministry at the Princeton Theological Seminary from 1893-1896. Upon graduation he immediately took a post as a PCUSA missionary to China. In 1905 he withdrew to independent ministry and teaching, serving later as Professor of Homiletics in the department of theology at the University of China, Chenju, Shanghai, 1925-1927. For a time he had also been connected with the National Tract Society for China. Among some Princeton alumni information, there is indication that he remained in China up until at least June of 1942. He was also the author of several books. Later returning to the United States, he died on 16 January 1951. MEASUREMENTS: Various. CONDITION: Newspapers with toning and chipping.
