This lot comprises an original wooden case with one bottle of 1907 vintage Champagne Goût Américain produced by Heidsieck & Co Monopole. This bottle was salvages from the wreck of the Swedish schooner Jönköping, after lying on the bottom of the sea for over 80 years. The bottle comes with a Certificate of Genuineness from The Baltic Wreck Jönköping AB
On November 3, 1916, the Swedish schooner „Jönköping“ was stopped by the German submarine U-22 close to the town Rauma in Finland. Because of her steel cargo, the commander of the U-22 decided to sink the Jönköping. On board, there were 50 cases with 3,000 bottles of champagne. Since then, they had been stored untouched, at a constant temperature of four degrees Celsius, in total darkness, surrounded by fresh water and under an optimal pressure at a depth of 64 meters at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
In 1997, Swedish divers discovered the wreck of the Jönköping. Within a year, about 2,000 bottles of champagne were recovered. This champagne by the renowned house of Heidsieck & Co Monopole is called Goût Américain, which means “American taste” and represents a sweeter variety of champagne that was popular at the beginning of the 20th century and is not produced any longer. The Station Oenotechnique de Champagne, an oenological laboratory near Reims in France, opened and analyzed some of the recovered bottles. The laboratory confirmed the high quality of the champagne, which has a light color with a trace of green, still sparkling and with a fabulous taste.
The fill level is low (< 12 cm) but normal for this wine. Only little remains of the label have been preserved and the capsule was made after the bottle was recovered.
