Description
An English white jasper and black Slave Emancipation Society seal , inscribed AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER , 3cm high, faintly inscribed in pencil verso and with date1827 Cf. the example sold in these rooms, lot 98, 2nd March 2011. See Reilly & Savage, The Dictionary of Wedgwood (1980), page 319 for discussion regarding this medallion. The original was modelled for Wedgwood in 1787 by William Hackwood (1757-1839), the greatest of the modellers that Josiah Wedgwood employed. The subject matter was taken from the seal of the Slave Emancipation Society of which Josiah Wedgwood was an active member. The Slavery Abolition Act was finally passed into law in the United Kingom in 1833 and outlawed slavery within the British Empire excepting those territories governed by The Honourable East India Company. Wedgwood were by no means the only company to manufacture Jasper.
