ALS A 17.6 x 11.3cm letter in French on cream paper, signed by Jean Jaures at foot, addressed to an unidentified correspondent ("Mon cher ami") and dated "le 30 Janner" [no year]. Mid-horizontal mailing fold, minor foxing to margins. Blue ink turned slightly violet. Translated text reads "You would be very kind, as you so kindly offered to my wife (this sentence added later by Jaures's hand in black ink), to procure for us two tickets for Siegfried, if possible between the 11th and 14th Febraury inclusive. My wife sends you and Madame Saculebrat (?) her best regards, and I add to it my friendly wishes". Lot also includes a vintage 13.7 x 9.7 sepia, head and shoulders photograph of Jaures. Jean Jaures (1859-1914) was one of the most important figures of the French Left at the beginning of the 20th century. He became leader of the Socialist Party in 1902. A strenuous antimilitarist, Jaures was assassinated by a French nationalist on the 31st of July 1914.
