Description
MEM A 22.5 x 14cm first edition copy of "A Letter to The Working Classes Containing Remarks on the French and Belgic Revolutions, the National Debt, Reform, Tithes, Taxes, ", by "Robin Goodfellow" [possible nom de plume of John Galt], review copy, 8vo, loose folded leaves in paper wrappers, London, John Horne, 1831. A 3cm tear along the fold, torn upper right corner of cover and chipping to margins. A few stains. Accompanied by a letter on sepia paper from the publisher to an unknown recipient in London, dated "Castle Street, Leicester Square March 1831". Mailing folds, damp stains and 1cm tear to upper margin. The letter reads "Sir, Allow me the liberty of soliciting your powerful aid to cause a more extended distribution of the enclosed well intended pamphlet. I am Sir your obedient humble servant, John Horne, Publisher". It seems plausible that Robin Goodfellow is a nom de plume, chosen by the writer to name himself after the archetypal trickster Puck. John Galt (1779-1832) was a Scottish-born writer and political and social commentator. He was the first English author to deal with issues of the Industrial Revolution in his works.
