Description
K-017 U.S. Artillery officer's "star of stars" belt plate. Relief American Eagle/shield/crossed cannons/stand of arms and a five pointed star made up of twenty smaller stars. An excavated piece which has a green patina, but still retains some traces of silver. The reverse is basically green and while the belt brace is flattened, the "tongue" remains. According to "American Military Insignia 1800-1851" by J. Duncan Campbell and Edgar M. Howell - figure 59 p. 34, the belt plate is for a Regular Army officer circa 1814-1821. "PLATES AND BUCKLES OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY 1795-1874" by Sidney C. Kerksis shows this buckle as Figure 160 on page 166 as a Militia buckle from 1810. Rare. II-
