Mme. Recamier (b. 1777) was a French socialite and patron of the arts. The original of this bust, done in terra cotta c. 1801, was by Joseph Chinard (1755-1813). It is said Napoleon disliked Mme. Recamier immensely for her intellect, believing that a woman should never upstage a man.
