Saint Ulrich of Augsburg (890-973) was one of the most influential clerics of his time and Bishop of Augsburg from 923 to 973. He enjoyed high reputation by the German kings Henry I and Otto I and the populace. He took care of monasteries and supported the poor. He acquired special merits through the successful defense of the city of Augsburg in times of Hungarian invasions. In the present linden wood sculpture, the saint is depicted in the robes of a bishop and with his attribute of the fish. The sculpture impresses with its detailed carving, especially in the face and the hair, as well as in the folds of the robe.
The sculpture is in original condition with typical wear and a beautiful patina of age. The wood shows traces of in inactive woodworm infestation. Some major wormholes have been closed. The left hand with the crozier is missing. The height of the sculpture is 69 cm. (cko)
