Description
Porcelain with polychrome painting in the colors of the Famille Rose
China, Daoguang period (1821-1850)
Elegant bowl on an articulated foot rim
The outer wall with a finely shaped, yellow sgraffito ground
Revolving circular flower paintings in four reserves with delicate, floral scenes
In between peach branches with large fruits and swastika emblems
The foot with a dynamic wavy border
In the centre a circular reserve with underglaze blue painting, roaring waves around rocks with lingzhi fungus
Inside on the wall four floral ornaments with peony and lingzhi fungus
Base with six-character Daoguang mark in underglaze blue
Dimensions: 6.5 x 15 cm
Very good condition

This bowl is decorated with auspicious symbols. So peaches for longevity, peonies for prosperity and lingzhi fungus for fulfillment are visible. Bowls with this pattern and delicate and refined painting were especially popular in the Daoguang period.


A bowl with a comparable pattern can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (acc. no. CIRC.631-1931), in the exhibition ‘Qing Mark and Period Monochromes and Enameled Wares’, S. Marchant and Son, London 1981, no 59; alsio in ‘Joined Colors: Decoration and Meaning in Chinese Porcelain, Chinese Ceramics from the Min Chiu Society, Hong Kong’, Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. 1993, p. 143, no. 69. as well as in the Roemer Museum Hildesheim, illustrated by U. Wiesner, ‘Chinesische Keramik: Meisterwerke aus Privatsammlungen’, Cologne 1988, no. 146.


Condition: The bowl is in very good condition with hardly any signs of age and wear. The height measures 6.5 cm and the diameter 15 cm.
