Item Details
Description
A-048 Swiss 19th Century marquetry "tilt-top" table and two matching chairs. Exquisitely carved layered acanthus leaf center post with three extended flowing serpentine shaped floral carved legs. 31" diameter top is inlayed with 8 lighter colored wood oval panels of "gamsbock" - surrounding the center (13" diameter) scene of two standing hunters and a third about to dress a downed trophy. A wonderful presentation of detailed costumed figures of the period. Floral/vine inlays outline the center panel and the surrounding panels are encased in a dark/lighter "sharks tooth" framing. A 3 1/2" inner border of a continuous inlayed fluid leaf/vine pattern attests to the skill of the artist. 1" carved floral edging tops a 1 3/8" floral/grape carved "curtain". Original iron locking mechanism. 46" tall - in a standing position. Two age separations do not detract from the integrity and character of this work of art. The two matching chairs exhibit the same high degree of craftsmanship - being profusely carved with a floral work on the backs, seat borders and legs. Both have two each, inlayed panels on the back - one chair has a scene of "gamsbock", the other of a hunter, and on the seats - "gamsbock" in their craggy environments. 35 7/8" tall and seats measure 13" x 18". Both backs are held in place with wood dowels. One of the chair backs has an inscription "Deutz Hochzeit - Brienz JR. 1837". Made as a Deutz family wedding gift by the master carvers of Brienz (Switzerland) in 1837. An unaltered excellent example of early high art wood artistry - which led to the development of the "Black Forest" carving industry. II
