Decorative porcelain vase in shape of a split rocking horse head; porcelain objects by Jeff Koons fetch up to €15,000 at international auctions

The design of the present porcelain vase reveals two halves of typical rocking horse heads, fit together along a split line in the center. The left side therefore shows a pony, while the right side depicts a dinosaur. Koons seems to have been deeply inspired by Cubism, since he deliberately proceeded with the practice of disassembling and re-assembling incoherent objects. The "Split Rocker" thus visualizes the idea of combining alleged contradictions and was repeated in different designs, including a colossal floral sculpture.

Porcelain plays however a special role in the work of Jeff Koons. The artist says: ‘I was always intrigued by porcelain, by both the economic and the sexual aspect of the material. Porcelain shrinks in the oven, therefore, there is a tightness to the material. Porcelain was the emperor's material but today it has been democratized and everybody can enjoy porcelain. […].’

The vase is made of fine porcelain and was manufactured by Bernardaud in France. It is the copy 467 of a limited edition of 3500. It is signed, numbered and dated on the underside ‘J […]. 0467/3500. 2012’. Besides, it is also titled ‘Split-Rocker’ and fitted with the maker’s mark, here. The piece is in mint condition. It measures c. 34 cm in height and the lateral diameter is c. 33 cm.

Jeff Koons (b. 1955)

The US-American artist Jeff Koons is one of the most successful contemporary artists. In his works Koons continually presents himself through pictures. His artistic output is therefore characterized by a garish, loud and colorful style which culminates in his monumental sculptures that oscillate between the poles of ‘art’ and ‘kitsch’. By doing so, the artist catches up with art historical traditions initiated by personalities such as Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. (cbo)
