Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 5,000 Euro
The design of the present porcelain vase reveals two halves of typical rocking horse heads and fit together along a split line in the center. The left side therefore shows a pony, while the right side depicts a dinosaur. Koons seems to have been deeply inspired by Cubism, since he deliberately proceeded with the practice of disassembling and re-assembling incoherent objects. The "Split Rocker" thus visualizes the idea of combining alleged contradictions and was repeated in different designs, including a colossal floral sculpture.
Condition:
The porcelain vase is in overall good condition. The original cardboard box is in good condition with only minor signs of wear. The vase measures 35.5 x 39 x 35 cm. The dimensions of the box are 37 x 43.3 x 43.3 cm.
Jeff Koons (b. 1955)
The US-American artist Jeff Koons is one of the most successful artists of the present. In his artworks, Koons continually presents himself through pictures. His works are characterized by a garish, loud and colorful style which culminates in his monumental sculptures that oscillate between the poles of ‘art’ and ‘kitsch’. By doing so, the artist catches up with art historical traditions initiated by personalities such as Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol.
