Bollifant, for Bonham Norton], [1600]; and the 3 other works mentioned in the note below (all defective), v.s. (4) sold not subject to return. Rosemary Verey was drawn to engravings of Knots for their connection with Elizabethan gardens and their potential to introduce pattern into contemporary garden design. Her search led her to this early translation by Richard Surflet of La Maison Rustique by Charles Estienne and Jean Liebault. She chose the knot that appears on page 339 of this edition as one of two she would use for the Barnsley House knot-garden . She later bought a further 1616 copy of La Maison Rustique with a dedication to Lord Willoughby by Gervase Markham in which the same knot appears on page 268). Further research led her to two separate editions of Leonard Meager's The English Gardner of 1688 and 1699. Here she noted the evolution of knot patterns, observing that Meager's designs were more simple than Markham's and others because they were more open and more like flowers. (Charles Verey)
