A RARE CLOISONNE ENAMEL AND GILT-METAL BIRD CAGE
19TH CENTURY
Of Cylindrical form, the cloisonne-mounted frame decorated with lotus scroll, which is repeated on the turrets rising from each rim and foot and the domed roof formed by gilt-metal bars, and one end with a pair of arched doors outlined in cloisonne, the bars on the sides set between cash borders. Birds and feeding containers hung o bar on each sides, all reserved in finely enameled against a wealthily bright turquoise ground with bands of zoomorphic scrolls, key fret designs and four flower sprays.
Mark on Base, Incised four character script, QianLong Reign Period.

In form this rare bird cage is similar to an Imperial cloisonne enamel dog kennel on wheels that is from the Qianlong period and now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, illustrated by H. Brinker and A. Lutz, Chinese Cloisonne: The Pierre Uldry Collection, Asia Society Galleries, New York, 1989, p. 55, fig. 32.
