Item Details
Description
Signed and titled verso, "Wm. H. Swasey 1880" this is an early folk art depiction of the Newburyport clam industry. Centered is a group of "Joppeites" who carry clams to the shanties for sale, some shuck while others are seen on the flats during low tide with Plum Island on the horizon. Note: William Swasey was a prosperous Newburyport industrialist and philathropist who is not known to have painted. He perhaps is identified verso for being the owner of the piece.
