Description
A period silver gelatin photograph of the circus at Madison Square Garden, showing most of the performers gathered in the three rings of the performance space with the stands filled to capacity. From the estate of Hugo Zacchini, The Human Cannon Ball. Interestingly hanging with advertising signs in the stands is a sign reading, "The Last Act of the Program/Hugo Zacchini". The photo is marked in negative lower right, "Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus/Madison Square Garden/New York City/1931," and copyright symbol over "1921/Century/Photo/74 W 47/N.Y.C.", 12" x 20", matted, 19" x 27". One of the finest circus photos of this period we have seen. Hugo Zacchini (1898-1975) began working for Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1929 and was also known for his paintings and drawings of circus life. Provenance: From an estate in which was originally purchased for his collection directly Hugo Zacchini.
Condition
A couple of tiny holes in paper near left margin, else fine.
