Description
This antique portrait is mysterious and beautiful. Composed with dramatic lighting and rendered in soft green, brown and black tones, it is a masterful Tonalist work, and could be a portrait from the Boston School of painters. However, the origin is uncertain. The painting is signed S. Bentivegna, and appears in its style and materials to be from around 1900, and perhaps from Italy. (The stretcher bars are a common Italian design used in the late 1800's and early 1900's.) Also the size is not in standard inches, as it would be if created in the USA. But, the painting was found in New England, and the painting style seems American more than European. Perhaps the artist was Italian, living & studying in the Boston area, and painted this when on a trip back home? Hmm. Enough sleuthing. I bought this one because it is just plain gorgeous. Didn't care about anything else. It's a wonderful painting and I kept it on the studio wall for almost a year, just to enjoy it. It is the kind of work which will make you feel great. The painting is 27.25" x 22.5", and is framed in a new custom-made gold-metal leafed wooden frame which measures 29"x24". The canvas has been lined to strengthen it, and a protective backing baord is attached to the stretchers. Item ID: 3011A Fixed Price Shipping & Insurance on this item =$87.00
