This antique American oil painting dates from around 1870. It shows the vast wilderness landscape of Echo lake at Franconia Notch, New Hampshire, and features two sets of deer under a dramatic clouded sky. Painted at a time when the Hudson River style of painting was dominant, it combines great details with the expansive celebration of the American countryside. The painting has a limited color range, reflecting the time period it was painted in - before the easy availability of modern bright pigments. There is a sense of naive charm and wonderment to the entire composition, which sets the placid deer as a focal point. The painting is 17" x 23.5", and frame size is 23" x 30" The painting has been archivally lined, gently cleaned, retouched and is coated with non-yellowing varnish.
