Description
This lovely watercolor painting of Stratford Hall (childhood home of Robert E Lee) and people in 19th-century dress is signed Davis Gray, and framed in a beautiful rubbed-gold frame. Frame size is 9.5" x 11.5" Davis Gray was a persona created by Massachusetts artist Ernest B. Walden (1929-1995). In fact, there is a confusion about which name came first. AskArt has this info: Davis Gray, the originator of this series, is an award-winning watercolorist with a national reputation. Mr Gray, a fine arts graduate of Dartmouth College and an alumnus of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, has to his credit a number of watercolor series, of which perhaps the best know are his college scenes. He has won first prize in watercolor at the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts, accumulated numerous awards in painting while at Dartmouth College. Other accounts list the credits as belonging to Ernest B. Walden. Either way, this is an interesting watercolor from an interesting artist! The painting is in good condition, bright colors with minor foxing. The frame has some minor scuffs which blend into its gold-over-red finish. Item ID: 4153AUC-1
