This “Biedermeier interior” depicts an upper middle class salon with purple wall-coverings, an extravagant secretaire and seating furniture padded with green cloth. With the curtains gathered up, the pair of portraits prominently displayed above the sofa, the chandelier, the fine embroideries, the carpets and the parquet floor, this deserted interior breathes the atmosphere of proper middle class, as it was so famous in the Prussian capital at the turn of the century.

The painting is of extraordinaire academic painting quality and is signed by “Paul Lothar Müller” at the bottom left. It is in good condition, although there is a larger crack in the middle. The frame shows minor traces of age and usage. The stretcher bar measures 100 x 80 cm, the overall dimensions are 110 x 90 cm including the frame.



Paul Lothar Müller (1869 – 1956)

Native Berlin painter Paul Lothar Müller worked in Italy since 1934, first in Verona, then in Venice. Müller became famous in Berlin in 1892/93 with his painting “Die große Stadt” (=the big city). Furthermore he painted landscapes, Berlin cityscapes and frescoes. His dwarf paintings were printed on postcards in 1920. His Italy and interior paintings are famous as well.
