This book ‘Ecce Homo’ with reproductions of drawings and watercolors by the German-American painter, printmaker and caricaturist George Grosz (1893-1959) was published in 1923 by the Malik-Verlag, Berlin and the illustrations were printed by Dr. Selle & Co. A.G., Berlin. The book contains offset lithographs after 84 drawings and 16 pates in colors after watercolor works. It is the edition C with a binding of laid cardboard and illustrated cover. The illustrations are characteristic of the satirical acuity of Grosz’s works. Grosz was taken to court for blasphemy after the release of the book in 1924.



The work is in an overall good condition. The laid cardboard binding shows distinct signs of age and wear. The sheets are slightly toned and display some minor blemishes to the edges. In conclusion it is a mostly clean copy. The dimensions are 36.5 x 27 cm.



George Grosz (1893-1959)

Georg Ehrenfried Gross first attended the Academy of Arts in Dresden. In 1912 the Berlin-born artist returned to his hometown, where he continued his art studies under Emil Orlik. A year later he went to Paris, where he attended the Académie Colarossi. In 1915 Grosz met Helmut Herzfeld (John Heartfield) and, like Herzfeld, anglicized his own name. Together with the Herzfeld brothers he founded the Malik publishing company. In 1918 Grosz was one of the founders of ‘Dada Berlin’. In the subsequent years the artist primarily dealt with the theme of the big city and the German bourgeois society, which he portrayed with critical and ironical punch. Grosz was the editor of several satirical magazines and developed collage and photomontage together with John Heartfield. In 1933 he moved to the United States. Here he taught at the Art Students League in New York as well as the Art School of the Columbia University and even opened his own art school with Maurice Sterne. In his late work, George Grosz turned to landscape painting. (tm)
