Verner Panton designed the S-chair, named after its S shape, for a competition. This chair displays the evolution of the Thonet bentwood chairs into the tubular steel cantilever that followed it. Panton’s S-chair combined the bentwood material that made the Thonet famous with the concept of the cantilever chair, which was later made using tubular steel. Panton's complex concept took ten years to implement, from the design to the chair's series production.
The chair is made ??of black painted plywood and was manufactured by A. Sommer for Thonet. Its special shape means that the chair can be stacked easily. The original paper label reads “THONET” and is located on the underside of the seat. It is 81.5 cm tall, 42 cm wide and 53 cm deep. The cantilever is in very good condition with just slight signs of wear to the seat.
Verner Panton (1926-1998)
Danish architect and designer Verner Panton is one of the most famous and influential designers of the 20th century. After his studies at the Technical College of Odense and the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, he began working for Arne Jacobsen and quickly developed his own style. He favored artificial materials and bright colors, transferring the Pop Art aesthetic to furniture and fittings and deeply shaping our image of the sixties and seventies. His designs, such as the Panton Chair, the Moon Lamp and the interior of publishing house Der Spiegel in Hamburg, were groundbreaking at the time and remain very popular today.
