This Ayutthaya style wooden bodhisattva was carved in Thailand. He sits in padmasana with the soles of his feet turned upwards. His left hand is placed in his lap and his right hand forms thebhûmispar?a mudra, the gesture of touching the earth. His fingers point towards the earth and with this gesture he calls on the earth to bear witness to the truth of his words.
The bodhisattva has expressive, aristocratic features. The eyes are inlaid with glass. His head, with remnants of a gilding, is crowned by an ushnisha. The elongated earlobes and the meditative facial expression underline the grandeur of the Enlightened.
The sculpture shows visible signs of age. There are shrinkage cracks and material losses. The underside of the base with traces of termite infestation which caused partial losses to the base. In places the remains of the chalk ground are visible. The height measures 71 cm. (tfa)
