This tall Mandalay-Buddha stems from Burma of the 19th Century. The Mandalay-Buddha is generally seen as the Burmese interpretation of Buddhism during the 19th Century. Buddha statues such as this are often rendered as a youth with an open, friendly facial expression. The head of the Buddha is covered with curly hair, on top formed in the so called Ushnisha style. A lotus is generally missing with the types of Buddha of the Mandalay-Period. The sculpture wears a long gown, which is decorated with pieces of differently coloured glass and which falls in broad, long folds. The Buddha holds his two arms stretched-out, grasping the corners of his gown. In his right hand, he additionally carries the Fruit of Life.
The statue is in original condition. A long crack along one fold is discernible, as well as some slit-offs of the wood and the paint. The overall height of the statue is 144 cm, its width 52 cm. The dimensions of the socket are 22 x 22 cm.
