This tall horseman from Mali was created by the Dogon Tribe, a tribe, which originated in Burkina Faso and which lives nowadays in Western-Africa and in the East of Mali. The Dogon Tribe is famous for its exceptional carving skills, especially for the wooden, ceremonial masks, which influenced the European view on African, tribal art during the 20th century to a large extent. This mask shows male characteristics- -with a beak like mouth and a Mohican like hair style. Especially striking with this sculpture are the scarifications- artistically rendered scars, which cover the entire body.
The sculpture is in original condition with several cracks in the wood as well as indentations and scratches due to age and wear. Some nailheads are visible. The overall dimensions are 105 x 50 cm.
