Description
Nawa-no-Nagashige Helping Go-Daigo Escape from Oki to His Castle, Funanoe-san

Emperor Go-Daigo and his attempt to return to power by overthrowing the feudal government was the model for the 19th century Meiji restoration. There are many stories of Go-Daigo's years in exile and his efforts to wrest control from the shogun. In this famous scene the Lord Nawa-no-Nagashige, who supported Go-Daigo, is helping the Emperor return from exile on Oki Island. The Emperor was unused to walking, as he was normally carried on a litter, so the faithful Nawa-no-Nagashige carried the emperor on his back and the pair returned to attempt to establish rule in Kyoto. An exceptional Yoshitoshi illustration of this historic tale, detailed with burnishing in the black court cap and armor.

13" x 8 3/4" + margins as shown
