Elegant lekythos with a very fine painted decor
The lekythos was used to store olive oil during the 5th century before Christ. As well, it served as a burial object for unmarried men. The present clay vase shows an engraved and black painted décor. It stands on a circular ring stand and has a conical body with a long retracted neck, an arched handle and a widely projecting mouth. The wall is painted all around with a figural motif, probably depicting Herakles, who mounts a chariot, followed by Athena. The upper edge is adorned with an ornamental frieze, while the top shows a stylized leaf pattern.
The vase was broken several times and has been restored professionally. The glaze is lost in part. There is a drilled hole on the underside (sampling for TL analysis). The height is 17 cm. (cko)
