Attributed to Thomas Gainsborough (British, 1727-1788), "Landscape During Storm", oil on copper, apparently unsigned. Small landscape painting depicting a cottage beside stream at left with steepled buildings in background surrounded by trees under overcast and stormy sky. Verso of frame with two red wax seal collector's stamp, one legible indicating that the painting was part of the collection of Alexander Cecil Fenton (Bayonne, New Jersey). Verso of wood panel (behind metal sheet) pencil inscribed "The Passing Storm by Gainsborough sold at Christie's 1842-43, from the Alexander Cecil Fenton Coll.". Verso of frame between wax seals with hand written ink script reading "Landscape near Moray Firth" with additional illegible text. Framed approximately 8.25" x 10.25". Unframed approximately 4.2" x 6.25". Note: Works from Alexander Cecil Fenton's fine art collection are noted in "Old and Modern Paintings by the Great Masters Forming the Important Collection of Mr. John Anderson", produced by the American Art Association,New York City, New York in 1916 as a part of their illustrated catalogue where they sold Mr. Anderson's collection. While the Gainsborough is not included in this work, Fenton is identified in provenance as owning other British works of the period such as Lot 30: a figural painting by Sir David Wilkie (English,1785-1841); a Jules Adolphe Aimé Louis Breton (French,1827-1906) figural painting; and a work by Jean Baptiste Edouard Detaille (French,1818-1912).
