Note: The Gold Eagle dated from 1795 and its name derived from the profession of its original owner Henry William De Saussure, direction of the United States Mint, under whose directorship the first “gold eagle” dollar was minted. The Gold Eagle was purchased by Kate Gleason of the Gleason Gear Works in 1927 and opened as the Gold Eagle Tavern, a hotel and restaurant in 1930. The Gold Eagle Tavern was famous for its location, décor and restaurant which blended the best of Lowcountry seafood and Continental specialties. It closed in 1961 and was demolished in 1971. The hotel furnishings, stored in a warehouse on Lady’s Island, SC, were purchased by Oscar Young of Beaufort, SC and were gifted to his son Philip Young of Atlanta, GA.
