Item Details
Description
Porcelain, cobalt blue underglaze painting
Germany, late 18th to early 19th century
Royal Porcelain Manufactory, Berlin
120-piece dish service, complete to serve 12 people
Underglaze blue sceptre mark and numbering underneath all pieces
Décor: everlasting flowers and butterflies, additions of onion pattern in cobalt blue
Length of the slender platter: 52 cm

The present set is from KPM Berlin, 'everlasting flowers and butterflies' on broken rod relief with some additions of the onion pattern décor. The porcelain service is comprised of the following single pieces: 3 terrines, 3 platters round, bowl, 4 serving platters oval, 2 nut bowls, serving platter slender, gravy boat, 2 mustard jars with lids, vase small (without mark), 2 wall plates, 16 starter plates (IV. choice), 19 salad plates, 12 soup plates, 18 eating plates, bowl with silver-plated metal handles (Meissen mark underneath, Dresden, Hirsch, 1894-1896), and terrine with metal trestle. The pattern onion cobalt blue was adapted by KPM in the late 18th century. In reality, the onion pattern is not designed with onions but with pomegranates and peaches. These fruits are symbols of fertility and a long life. This porcelain service is special in the elaborate refinements like the angel handles of the bowl, the trestle of the other bowl and the pretty little mustard jars.

The condition of the service displays signs of wear and use. 30 pieces are shoved, show ruptures, cracks and partly craqueled glazing (1 terrine, 1 serving bowl large, 1 serving platter small, 1 gravy boat, 8 dinner plates, 8 soup plates, 3 plates of medium size, 1 bowl small, 2 plates small, 1 saucer, 3 cups). The plate of one of the mustard jars had broken into two and has been glued again, the glue marks are visible. One of the cups has got a newly glued handle. The metal holder of the bowl is dented at one part. The length of the slender platter is 52 cm.

KPM – Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin

The manufactory that was founded in 1763 by Frederick the Great was based on three private companies that had tried for some time to produce porcelain in Berlin. The manufactory has been located near the Tiergarten in Berlin since 1871. It took up the production of painted porcelain tiles under the direction of Professor Alexander Kips and made a huge profit. After the destruction of the manufactory during the Second World War the Land of Berlin took over the company in 1988. Since 2006 the company is owned by the private banker Jörg Woltmann.
