Excellent example of a historicist silver work that combines elements of the Baroque era with details of the Rococo

This large lidded goblet made of 12 lot silver is the work of a German silversmith from 1859. The cup-shaped cuppa stands on a slightly arched foot ring with a baluster shaft. The identical lid features a knob with a five-pointed crown. The body strikes particularly with its wrought flower decoration that is repeated at the foot, the cuppa and the lid. Two engraved reserves at the cuppa bear dedications and refer to the origin and date of production: ‘Dem Stadtältesten Herrn Wilhelm Zellner die Stadt Plefs’ and ‘Zum 50 jährigen Bürgerjubiläum am 2 Januar 1859’ [To the founder of the city, Mr. Wihlem Zellner, from the city of Plefs/ To the 50 year civic anniversary on 2 January 1859]. Above one inscription, there are displayed Masonic symbols: a triangle as a symbol of law and order, a hammer reprsenting the ‘Master of the chair’ and a trowel as a symbol of the journeyman level.

The lidded goblet is in good condition, showing light wear due to age. The lid edge is slightly compressed, and below the knob there is a small dent. The height including the lid is 37.5 cm, and the diameter is 14.5 cm. Overall weight with the filling: circa 910 grams. (cko)
