This Chocolat Menier cocoa box from c. 1900 depicts a famous motif by Firmin Bouisset. The lithographed tin is a very rare product for the British market with the most famous advertising motif of French poster art: a little girl is writing ‘Drink Cacao-Menier and Chocolat-Menier’ on a house wall. A typical Art Nouveau decoration with cocoa beans and leaves frame the main motif. The tin shows the original beautiful sheen with strong colors.
The tin is in good condition consistent with age. The tin shows traces of corrosion with a small dent in above the lower rim. There are superficial signs of wear such as scratches and minor color losses. The lid sits very securely. The height is 11 cm and the diameter is 8 cm.
Firmin Bouisset (1859-1925)
The French painter and poster artist Firmin Bouisset specialized children’s subjects and also illustrated books. Bouisset worked for numerous French food companies, yet is most famous for his Menier posters. (tfa)
