The present flower still life in oil on canvas panel was painted by the Belgian figure, landscape and still life painter Herman Courtens from Brussels (1884-1956). The voluminous flower bouquet with white dahlias in a bulbous vase is rendered in a slight impressionist manner. The still life gives evidence of a loose brushwork. The flower bouquet hardly differs from the abstract, brownish and green background, as the colours and forms merge into each other in some parts. The painting is signed and inscribed „Herman Courtens Bruxelles“ at the lower left.

The painting is in good condition. The composition shows some small stains of white color at the margins. The frame is in good condition, too. The corners are slightly bumped. The overall dimensions are 67.2 x 71.3 cm. The canvas panel measures 57 x 61 cm.

Herman Courtens (1884-1956)
Herman Courtens was born in Brussels in 1884 and died in 1956. He has mainly painted women and children, but also made animal and still life paintings. Courtens has worked as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts of Anvers. Amongst others, his works have been exhibited at the Salon de la Nationale.
