A haunting portrait with contrasting light and shadow effects, which stylistically echoes Groeber’s contemporaries Leibl, Liebermann and Corinth; portraits by the artist fetch over 12,000 Euros at international auctions

This portrait of Hermann Groeber (1865-1935) was built around 1895. The work shows the bust of a man. Face, clothes and hat are presented in earthy tones just like the background. Painted with simplified, broad brushstrokes the portrait nevertheless exhibits a haunting quality, showing a determined man. Groeber was a painter of reality, rooted in his home country Bavaria, whose landscapes and people he often captured in his works. His paintings are of a reduced formal language and characterized by a deep human understanding of his models, which is reflected in the portraits. Stylistically Hermann Gröber’s portraits are reminiscent of the works by his contemporaries, the German Impressionists Wilhelm Leibl, Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth.

On the verso the artist painted an oil sketch of a hand.

The painting is in good condition. In the left background there is a superficial scratches, on the reverse along the edges of the board some small defects due to framing. The reverse bears the estate stamp ‘Nachlaß des Akademieprofessors Herman Groeber’. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 60 x 51.5 cm, the board measures 49 x 39 cm.
