This oil painting illustrates a romantic river landscape with cattle standing in the water in front of a bridge. In the background a farm appears on a gently rising hill. The image was created by the German-American painter Johann Gustav Grunewald, who at the age of 15 attended the Dresden Academy of Arts where he was a student of Casper David Friedrich. After his training, he emigrated to the U.S.A. and settled in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he became successful as a painter.
The painting is signed lower right in red ‘G. Grunewald’. It is in an age-appropriate condition. The canvas is trimmed and laid down on cardboard. Around the margins and occasionally on the surface with smaller loss of color and slight retouching. Lower left with rectangular restored tear. On the back labeled with information about the artist. The image measures 41 x 43.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 53.5 x 46 cm. The frame also shows slight signs of wear. (cru)
