The colored etching shows a picturesque view of the Lower Austrian market town of Falkenstein with the castle ruin lying on a mountain. The sheet originates from the two-volume work ‘Historisch-malerische Ansichten von Österreich’ (Historical and picturesque views of Austria), which Anton Köpp of Felsenthal issued together with his brother Christian from 1814 to 1824. It contained 80 Austrian views and appeared in four different editions. Anton Köpp of Felsenthal (1766-1826) was born in Vienna into a family of artists. He was trained by his father and studied at the Vienna Academy.

The colored etching is inscribed in the plate lower left ‘Nach der Natur gezeichnet’ and lower right ‘und geätzt von A. Köpp v. Felsenthal’ and lower center titled in the plate ‘Falkenstein’. The lower margin is inscribed in pencil by another hand. The sheet is mounted unter a passepartout along the reverse sheet edges and in good age-appropriate condition. The frame also is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The sheet measures 42.8 x 55 cm. The framed dimensions are 51.3 x 59.3 cm. (fea)
